Weight Loss Strategies

When working on a weight loss plan many people will find that there is a lot of conflicting information. Some will say that eating only grapefruit is a good plan. Others suggest in a good diet plan one can eat whatever they want and exercise, or that you can get off by drinking a vitamin shake three times a day. While all these might cause weight to be lost, none of them are very healthy. Any plan to lose weight for the long-term has to be a healthy lifestyle change, none of these diets are sustainable, nor are they healthy.

A healthy diet plan consists of a reasonable calorie minimum, maximum, and following the food pyramid. This means limiting the number of desserts and making higher calorie favorite foods a treat for every once in a while. Typically, a healthy calorie requirement is between 1200 and 1800 for women, and slightly higher for men. Teens generally have a higher calorie requirement due to their growing bodies. This number should be calculated off of ones height, weight and activity level.

Another part of weight loss is exercise. Fitness training will make the human body do what it is supposed to do: move. Many companies and gyms offer fitness equipment to do just that. Some options are the elliptical, the treadmill, and weight training options.

It is recommended that any fitness training regimen to have both cardio and strength training exercise, as both cardio and strength training are equally important for the body. Each piece of fitness equipment in a gym have both their pros and their cons.

Strength training options such as weights allow the muscles to get stronger with repetition which help the body burn more calories. If a person has a low body fat percentage, the muscles will be very visible which is often seen as desirable. The downside about weight training options is it trains the strength of individual muscles as opposed to the muscles working together. This could mean a person who regularly works on a weight machine could still struggle lifting their fifty pound child.

Cardio equipment like the treadmill and the elliptical have the benefit of any cardio activity. The treadmill is seen as a great alternative to outdoor running when the weather is not great, such as during the winter or on a rainy day. The cons of the treadmill are mostly concerning the impact of running taking a toll on the knees and the machine itself. Treadmills that are used regularly typically need a lot of maintenance because of the sheer amount of impact placed on it.

Elliptical machines are a lot better when it comes to impact and are best for those who are aging, suffered from, or are trying to avoid, knee problems. They also make a good workout for people looking for a full body workout. On the downside, some people find that it is too easy to slack off while on an elliptical as opposed to a treadmill which keeps its own pace.
